About Alexander Unseth

Alexander is what some may call an unorthodox composer. At the age of 17, he officially began composing without any formal training, guided solely by his perfect pitch. Just a year later, he won the Voss Family Originality Award for Beethoven on Broadway, a piece for cello and piano that he performed in the finals of the Fabulous Fox Theatre’s St. Louis Teen Talent Competition. This was the true start of his compositional journey.

Since then, Alexander has gone on to win recognitions in numerous international composing competitions; countries include the USA, Canada, and England. His largest achievement to date is winning first-place in the 2023 Best Symphonina of the Year Award Competition at just 21 years old; he is currently the youngest composer to ever win the competition. The winning work, entitled Symphonina in C, was praised by judges as having “Hollywood flair,” “sparkling imagination,” and “lots of orchestral color and life.” It is the featured work on the award-winning album, Advent of the Symphonina. He will serve as a judge on the voting panel for the 2024 Best Symphonina of the Year Award Competition.

He is also a featured artist on the upcoming London-based album, New Baroque - Sonatas, after winning the 2024 Ruzickova Composition Competition. He was also just 21 at the time of this win and is the youngest composer to win the competition in its five-year history. The winning piece, entitled One of Seven, is published through Prima la musica.

Alexander places a large emphasis on composing for amateur/smaller ensembles since they often do not have new music written for them. His first major collaboration was with the St. Louis University High School (SLUH) Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble he played in until his graduation from SLUH in 2021. The premiere of his work, entitled Heroic Journey, was conducted by Alexander himself to widespread acclaim. This was Alexander’s third time conducting the ensemble without any formal training. He has also worked with musicians and ensembles from Arizona State University, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Rockhurst High School, St. Francis de Sales, and The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

Aside from composition, Alexander is also an accomplished cellist and pianist. He studied cello under Mary Lou Gotman and David Kim and played in numerous prestigious youth orchestras including the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Missouri All-State Orchestra, and the St. Louis Metro District 8 Orchestra (principal cellist). His solo performances consistently achieved gold medals at the Missouri State Solo and Ensemble Festivals. For piano, he received instruction from Vera Parkin. On both instruments, he has played in the pit for musicals such as Chicago, Into the Woods, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and Little Women.

Alexander is currently an undergraduate student at UMKC studying business administration and economics.
